Losing a partner is never easy, and it brings a wave of challenges that can feel overwhelming, especially when it comes to feeling safe and finding comfort in your home again. After my husband Jim passed away, I faced the same struggles. From feeling uneasy in my own house at night to navigating the emotional weight of an empty bed, I discovered solutions that not only helped me cope but also empowered me. These solutions have now become the foundation of the Peace N Comfort brand.
Finding Safety at Home
When I began living alone, safety became my top priority. Here are the steps I took to regain peace of mind:
- Porch Lighting: I replaced my porch light bulbs with dusk-to-dawn bulbs. This simple change gave me the assurance that my porch would always be well-lit when I got home after dark, without the need to leave the lights on all day.
- Ring Camera: Living in the country made me anxious about security when I wasn’t home, especially at night. Installing a Ring camera was a game-changer. I now get alerts if there’s movement on my porch or in the driveway, giving me peace of mind, whether I’m home or away.
- Security Latches: I installed specialized security latches on both my front door and basement door. While it might seem like overkill to some, this added layer of protection helped tremendously in restoring my sense of security.
- Personal Protection: As a concealed carry holder, I also found comfort in keeping my handgun nearby in a secure storage solution that fits my needs.
- Safe for Valuables: I bought a safe for important valuables, eliminating the fear that someone could easily steal things that matter most.
These actions not only gave me a sense of security but empowered me to reclaim control over my environment. If you’re struggling with the same fears, know that you can regain peace in your home with practical steps like these.
Creating Comfort and Rest
Beyond safety, finding comfort in my home after Jim passed away was a challenge. I struggled with sleepless nights, an empty bed, and constant restlessness. Here’s how I reclaimed my space:
- Switching Bed Sides: It may sound simple, but switching to the other side of the bed gave me some emotional relief, a trick Jim had shared with me when I wasn’t feeling well.
- Pillow Design: After trying several pillows, I created a custom one that finally gave me the restful sleep I’d been missing. I started producing this pillow because it was such a game-changer for me, and now it’s available for others through Peace N Comfort. Click here to view the pillow.
- Magnesium Body Butter: I also worked with a friend to develop a magnesium-infused body butter, which helps me relax, ease muscle tension, and improve sleep quality. This product is now available as part of the Peace N Comfort collection. Click here to view the body butter.
- Journaling: Writing down my swirling thoughts before bed helped me clear my mind and find some peace. A specially designed journal for women navigating early widowhood is in the works as well.
Building Community and Support
No one should have to walk this journey alone. I’ve created a private Facebook group for women who are living alone due to death or divorce. In this space, we provide a safe place to vent, share, and support each other. We also host monthly Zoom calls where we can connect more deeply. As the Peace N Comfort brand grows, this group will be the first to hear about new products designed to bring peace and comfort into your life.
